one year ago today...

One year ago today, we were in the middle of a HUGE ice-storm.  Our power had been out for a few days and we were all snuggled in bed wearing layer upon layer of clothing and hiding under a ton of quilts. We were freeeeezing!

One year ago today Essie was nestled warm and snug in my belly.

As I type this today we are getting the first of another big Winter Blast and I can hear the sleet hitting the windows.  School is cancelled for tomorrow and Essie is nestled snug and warm in her crib.

Wow...what a difference a year makes!

the croup...

My poor baby's cough has gotten worse and worse. Therefore I called the doc this morning to see what we should do.  They said since she had a wet, rattly cough that we needed to come in again.  So we took her this afternoon and she has croup.  They gave us some steroids for her to take.

I've been getting stuff ready for a big upcoming consignment event and came across these little Nikes...they were my niece Haleys!  They are still a little too big but aren't they tooooo super cute on those chubby legs?

And then after bath I decided to blow dry Essie's hair (since she is not obsessed with the blowdryer!).  And this is what we got.....

sick lil one...

We have been very lucky in that Essie has not really been sick so far...we've had a red square incident and a stomach bug but that's it as far as sickness really! She's had a runny nose for about a week but we just though that was due to the teething. Last night she coughed all night and was up every 3 hours and this morning her nose was runny with green junk so I decided it was time to get it checked out. I went on to work and took her to daycare....but I left at lunch to pick her up and take her to the doctor. He said she looked really good and agreed it was just a runny nose/teething.

Even though she didnt' feel great she sure looked cute today!

I L-O-V-E these shoes...I got them awhile ago on 70% off and they just now fit her....

After we got home Essie had a Paci-Palooza! I wanted to see if she had changed her mind about the different pacis yet! She was tooooo funny with this...

I poured a whole bunch in her lap and just let her go at it...I buried her green paci at the bottom. She picked each one up and investigated it...turned it over and looked at each side...

Just look at those eyebrows.

And she would put it in her mouth and spit it out...

She even began to throw the rejects to the side! :)

In the end she chose her old green paci of course!

SAY MAMA!!!!

So Essie Claire is a PRO at saying da-da...in fact she's so good that she says it ALL the time...in fact she not only says da-da but now says daddy. And all I hear ALL DAY long is da-da, da-da, da-da, daddy, daddy, daddy. SOOOOO I've been trying to get her to say Mama! This morning when I asked her to say it she would make the FUNNIEST FACE EVER! She squinted her eyes up and smiled straight across. We all laughed hysterically and then she began to do it EVERY SINGLE TIME we asked her to say Mama....so funny. Well at least she has my sense of humor!

I eat my words...

When I found out that we were having a girl I said that we would NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER, EVER  put her in a pageant.  I think it's just awful to put your child out to be judge.  All I can imgaine is those terrible parents off of TLC's Toddlers & Tiaras show.

Well earlier this week I came across a flier for "Cupid's Cuties".  It caught my eye so I picked it up to examine closer.  And it said "Circle of Friends" at the top.  Ive mentioned earlier that I am in an organization called Circle of Friends here in Jboro...we raise money for Arkansas Children's Hospital.  The Paragould chapter was putting on a valentines day pageant to raise money for ACH.  I continued to read and saw that is said "SUNDAY's BEST ATTIRE OR VALENTINE'S OUTFITS ONLY". So at that point I thought...this might be fun! It's not really a "pageant" more like a charitable benefit, right?  And beside Essie had just gotten the cutest valentines day outfit and it would be perfect.

So...I  ate my words and I signed her up and the grandparents made plans to attend.

As soon as we pulled into the parking lot my heart sank...it was the PAGEANT PEOPLE!  You know the ones....the ones carrying suitcases of gear and rolling toolboxes of makeup.  Oh I hadn't signed up for this!

Once we got inside it only go worse...there were mothers putting mascara (YES MASCARA!!!) on infants.  Mothers putting blush and hairpieces (YES, HAIRPIECES) on little ones.  There were threats of not taking the kids to CHUCK E. Cheese, little girls throwing fits with mascara running down their faces, and again mothers painting their children's faces and teasing their hair beyond imagine.  Some had curlers in.  Some brought curling irons and blowdriers.

And the outfits...OH THE OUTFITS!!!!  They were not "sunday's best" at all.  It was sickening...it was disgusting...it was tragic.

I was embarrassed to be there....I felt sorry for the little girls who's moms were out of their minds...and I wanted to grab my little "natural beauty" and run home.  I was utterly disappointed...I had naively pictured a room filled with doting mothers who's little girls were dressed as normal little girls should.  I had not planned for this...it was like a scene straight out of TODDLERS AND TIARAS!  I kept looking for the camera crew.  And even though I wanted to leave I thought...NOPE! I'm going to walk my little "natural beauty" up on that stage proudly! After all...it is for ACH, right?

So we did...we did the stage walk...the announcer butchered her name...called her Elsie three times...and we waited for the results.  I was NOT expecting to win...after all we were the non-pageant people and  I COULDN'T CARE LESS IF WE WON AT THIS POINT!  And the first category was "best personality"...you know the one that really MEANS the most....at least to me....and it went to contestant #4..Essie Claire House!  I was shocked...so reluctantly walked her back onto the stage....accepted her little trophy and had to wait up there until the others were called.  They handed out the "best dressed" award and the "people's choice".  And then it was time for "prettiest eyes"...again it went to Essie!  At this point I was almost beside myself in the irony of it all!  Then came the "beauty ones"...and again...Essie took 2nd alternate!  I was shocked and hysterically laughing all at the same time.  My lil one had beaten the pageant moms at their own game....I found it simply funny!

After that we left...to go eat at Brickhouse pizza...and celebrate (haha)....and share the outgrageous pageant mom stories we had all experienced!  Here is a pic of Essie's entourage that came to support her...both sets of grandparents and Sarah & Matthew!

So needless to say...that was Essie's first and LAST pageant experience.....but on the bright side...I bet that Arkansas Children's Hospital gained alot  from it all! And we all came home with funny stores and 3 trophies and a sash to add to Maggie & Tucker's trophy collection! hahahaha!

Essie's favorite shopping places!

I get asked all the time where I get Essie's clothes. And honestly the answer is consignment! I get probably 75% of her stuff at consignment stores or events. I HARDLY EVER pay full price for anything! Seriously! But when I do go shopping either online or instore these are my favorites:
Online:

In store:

  • Target! I love target's clothes!
  • TJ Maxx...I love scouring there and trying to find really unique things!
  • Old Navy...I love their baby lines!
  • Gymboree...I don't shop there much (we don't have one local...but I have shopped online a few times).
  • KiddlyToes(a local store where I get shoes and bows)

28 Weeks...
